Hooked on Hydra
As a teenager I first came to Hydra in 1987, a very different place to how the island has progressed…we spent nights in Disco Heaven and Pirate Bar, mixing with the locals and making merry!
Despite all the changes over the years, Hydra maintains a charm and warmth off the tourist trail. You’ll find a slower pace of life and nothing happens very fast, which is wonderful for downtime. If you are looking for a step back in time and an appetite to experience the ‘real’ Greece then Hydra has lots to offer.
The island has friendly people who treat you like family and look forward to welcoming you back year after year. No cars, just donkeys and good old walking feet are needed to climb the steps, which is bliss for the weary corporate city girl! Home made honey, organic veggies from the garden, fresh fish cooked on an open log fire, water from the well, are all part of the continued way of life here, so if you’re looking for a ‘sea change’ experience, this is it.
The beautiful houses, the beaches in summer and some great walks are just a few of the things the island has to offer. Watch the boats, fishermen in the early morning, the people go by, play a game of backgammon, visit the art galleries, explore the island’s history and quaint shops or have a beer and calamari.
With family here I need no excuse to keep coming back, but one visit can get you hooked!
