We're often referred to simply as Douskos Tavarna
Because the taverna has been in the Douskos Family hands for nearly 200 years
For lunch or dinner at our atmospheric taverna.
With its hint of bygone days,
Delicious well-cooked Greek food,
Homemade wine from our own barrels,
Served by our friendly professional staff,
With prices that won't spoil your holiday!
Choose your lunch from the wide range of dishes on our menu
Or come inside to see our dishes of the day.
Our fish is always fresh from the fishermens' catch.
In addition to our fish and vegetarian menus we also grill chicken and pork and frequently have the tasty beef in red sauce or homemade burgers or mousaka.
Wedding Receptions & Parties
We can cater for parties of up to 200 guests either inside or outside in our courtyard.
Our mid week set menus for lunch or dinner parties start at €35 per head including house wine.
Xeri Elia is the only taverna in Hydra offering traditional Greek live music every weekend throughout the season. Our musicians are available for events during the week too.
And we are a popular choice for community gatherings such as the Carnival Party, Pascha and more recently for annual events such as the Rebetika Event at the end of the season.
Everyone is welcome to join the singing, dancing and fun.
180 years ago the 'platia' (square) in front of the taverna was the commercial hub of the town but by the 50's the taverna's tables moved outside to serve food to an ever growing number of tourists coming to the island as well as local families who wanted to gather together for celebrations.
The Australian literary couple Charmian Clift and George Johnston, who had lived in Hydra since the mid-‘50s, were at the centre of a circle of artists who had established themselves on the island. They would spend their mornings at the Katsikas General Store (now the Roloi) and come to Xeri Elia to continue their discussions, play music, sing and of course eat and drink. This group of foreign artists included: Sidney Nolan, Mungo MacCullum, Robert Owen, Peter Finch, Anthony Kingsmill, Allen Ginsberg, Norwegian author Axel Jensen and of course the singer/songwriter Leonard Cohan who also made Hydra his home in the mid 60’s. The tree in our courtyard that Leonard Cohen was photographed under for a magazine article is still in our courtyard, although it is considerably larger today!
