Originally built in 1803 this beautiful 'Archontika' was restored, as a home, to all its former glory in 2010 and guests are now invited to enjoy Hydra's renaissance and the experience of staying in one of the island's stately homes - The Hydrea Hotel.
Hydra's historical and prestigious 'Archontika' (mansion houses) were built by Genovese architects who were invited to the island over 200 years ago by prominent and wealthy Hydriot families. It is these impressive buildings, overlooking Hydra port and town, which give Hydra its noble aspect making a unique architectural statement. Buildings such as the mansion of Manolis Tobazis and his wife Xanthi Sahini, now the Athens School of Fine Arts, the Lazarous Kountouriotis mansion, one of Hydra's best loved museums and now the Hydrea Hotel, originally the home of the Economou-Mirkikli then Frangiscos Voulgaris family.
Combining some fine antique furniture and a wealth of original features with modern design elements, the hotel is a perfect blend of traditional and modern aesthetics.
The main building's grand saloni (sitting room) is comfortably furnished with sofas, tables and a bar. There is also a quiet room for you to enjoy a book or private phone call.
The Hydrea Hotel is built round the main entrance courtyard terrace, which offers one of the best views of the whole of Hydra Harbour.
The pubic rooms and three of the bedrooms are in the Main Building. Two bedrooms are located off the Terrace with the final three bedrooms in the White Building. Moving throughout the hotel is a delight of unexpected corners, ancient doors, original features such as the oven that would have supplied the household with cooked food 200 years ago and intriguing staircases to explore.
The Hydrea Hotel has an impressive and private back door from the public rooms leading outside to a flight of wide stone steps that take you up through the boundary wall of the hotel's grounds to an area of open ground above the hotel. Here there is the tiny Orthodox Chapel of St. George. The chapel terrace and the surrounding level ground is surrounded with pine trees which provide beautiful dappled shade. Ideal as a location to hold a civil ceremony or for an Orthodox wedding in the chapel, followed by reception drinks on the Hydrea's beautiful terrace before going to dinner with your guests.
