Panagiotis Tetsis - Artists on Hydra Island

1925 - 2016

Tetsis was born on Hydra in 1925 and although he travelled a lot, (having spent his childhood and teenage years on Hydra, he moved with his family to Piraeus in 1937), he frequently returned home to Hydra and was often seen out and about painting Hydra's landscape.

In later years, from 2005, he spent more time on the island painting portraits of his closest friends and family.

He died in Athens in March 2016 at the age of 91 and is buried on Hydra.

Tetsis was a proponent of the post-impressionistic seascape tradition. In 1949 Tetsis along with Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Yannis Moralis, Nikos Nikolaou, Nikis Engonopoulos, and Yiannis Tsarouchis, established the "Armos" art group. In retrospect, this was a hugely important milestone for Hydra, marking the point when Hydra became noticed as the 'place-to-be' for those looking for creative inspiration including Greek and international artists, writers, film-makers who burst upon the scene in the 1950's.

The Tetsis Home & Atelier is operated on Hydra by the management of the Lazaros Kontouriotis Mansion.

To visit the Tetsis home, you will need to obtain a ticket at the Kontouriotis Mansion and you will then be taken, 100m up a few steps, to the house for a private viewing with one of the Kountouriotis guides.
