Filemata - Hydra Delicatessen

A Wonderful Source of Locally Produced Delicacies

A treasure trove for classic Greek cooking essentials

Locally sourced fruit, vegetables, salad & Greek cheeses brought to Hydra on the 'Agios Nikolaos' the family's traditional wooden boat.

Fresh local herbs hand-picked and prepared by Vicky.

Home cured olives and homemade wine by Nikos.

And fresh, free-range eggs from their hens.

We are as environmentally conscious as possible and recycle plastic water bottles to sell our home produced wine and olives in. And we look for as much produce that is not modified, nor treated with chemicals so that we sell the most wholesome food we can. Most of our herbs have been hand-picked on the mountain sides of Hydra & Dokos, dried in the traditional method and sold to you to take a little taste of Greece home with you.

We do also sell a small selection of preserves in jars and dried fruits which again we source from suppliers who use natural ingredients. One concession we make to 'this century' is to have electricity in the shop so we can run our fridge for all the delicious locally produced cheeses that we sell.

We even have local pottery crock pots for you to take home as souvenirs to keep your butter, cheese or salt in!

All of the items we sell in our shop are useful things that have been used in Hydriot homes for generations and they make unique gifts and souvenirs to remind you of your holidays in Hydra.

For our local customers and house owners on the island, we provide 'gas bottle' refilling and supplies of logs for winter fires.

In addition to decorative, unglazed wall plaques that again made nice souvenirs, we also sell the corner stones which make Hydra buildings so distinctive. They are terracotta and not as heavy as you would think to carry home in your luggage!

Our traditional wooden boat, "Agios Nikolaos' is a working boat even though it is very 'photogenic' in the port! Captained by Jannis Koukoudakis (brother of Nikos) the Agios Nikolaos regularly sails between Hydra and the mainland collecting and delivering supplies.

If you would like to arrange to transport goods or to make a sea excursion, please call in at the shop to discuss.

Mr Koukoudakis was one of my favourite Hydra characters whom I met when I first landed in Hydra for a holiday in the late eighties. At the time, he was the only grocer selling courgettes which I needed to cook dinner for the friends I was staying with. From 2000 - 2014 the two of us waged a battle of wits in my attempt to take a photo of him laughing versus his determination to appear as a curmudgeonly man - which he most definitely was not. It will forever be a source of frustration that I never managed to capture him when he was laughing with me because yet again he had thwarted my efforts. But I have my memories to make me smile and I know that he would be so proud of his son Nikos, and Vicky his beautiful bride to be, for continuing the family tradition. This photo is published as my tribute to him. He would frequently hand me a lemon when I walked by telling me it was 'Kala', good for me and it is a bitter sweet reminder of him when Nikos, his son, peels me an orange instead. With love from Kelsey 26th March 2016.
