Karamela - Καραμέλα
The sweetest experience on Hydra Island!
Karamela makes me feel nostalgic! Nostalgic for my favourite patisseries such as the Ritz in London where I used to take high tea with my Grandmother. I would agonise over the cake trolley in a serious dilema deciding between a chocolate eclair or a slice of lemon meringue pie. Nostalgic for Ladurée Paris on the Champs Elysées and their wonderful macaroons. Even Karamela's magnificent marshmellows bring back wonderful memories of toasting them over the fire with my daughter. So having always had a very sweet tooth, I was delighted when Karamela opened its doors on Hydra especially as their marvellous confections are right up there with the best. Not only do their lemon meringue pies and macaroons live up to my high expectations but now I am addicted to their delectable handmade truffle chocolates too. Come to that, their unusually flavoured ice-creams aren't to be missed either. Oh dear, just writing this page is bringing on a 'Ritz' moment!
The shop is just off the harbour front and is open in the morning for you to enjoy excellent coffee, with a muffin of course. Or you might like a croissant, plain or with a fruit filling.
Confectioners Mamina Psomara & Arstotelis Rapti are passionate about cake and sweet making. They bake on the premises to supply the shop with all its mouth-watering treats but also supply the dessert menu for the first class seafood restaurant 'Orea Ydra'. Such is their reputation and skill, home owners holding dinner parties pre-order their desserts to take away!
Karamela ice-creams and sorbets are the Italian type gelato, with unique flavours based on exclusive recipes: amigdaloto (macaroon), yoghurt and pomegranate and chocolate with amarena and chocolate chips.
One of my favourite habits when it comes to dining out of an evening is to do the 'Hydra Wander'. You start off for pre-dinner drinks in one place, wander to your favourite restuarant, then the highlight of the evening is to wander to Karamela for the sweetest of endings. Served from the shop but on the comfortable tables and chairs on the harbour, this is a delightful way to end your evening. And if you don't want coffee with your 'naughty but nice' treat you can always enjoy a glass of Karamela's excellent organic wine.
And in case you haven't yet realised, Karamela is my favourite place to visit in Hydra Harbour. I highly recommend it but like me, I think you will be in a dilemma when it comes to choosing, so give yourself pleanty of time! Regards, Kelsey.
