The Mandraki 1800 Taverna is a most welcoming sight when you get to the end of the coast road from Hydra Harbour going east to Mandraki Bay. This delightfully authentic taverna surrounded by shady eucalyptus trees, is on the road overlooking the small beach to the side of the bay.
Since 1996 the Mertzanis Family business has been welcoming visitors with the sort of genial hospitality associated with bygone years when strangers were met as friends and encouraged to stay for a meal with the familty.
The taverna opens at 12 mid-day and stays open during the summer season until 1am. It's a perfect place to call in for a late breakfast or lunch overlooking the pretty little beach. And after an idyllic day lazing in the sun or swimming in the crystal clear sea, staying for dinner watching the changing light under the stars is truly the icing on the cake!
With it's simple decor and traditionally painted pots and chairs, Mandraki 1800 is one of the few truly authentic tavernas left on Hydra.
Lazaros and Anastasia Mertzanis run the taverna together. On the mornings when the island's fishermen arrive with their catch, Lazaros is there to meet them. He selects the tastiest fish of the day which is served at the taverna. Their popular specialities are lobster and shrimp saganaki and the pickled octopus is a delicious delicacy too.
And for holidays and special occasions Lazaros organises traditional BBQ's of lamb on the beach, especially at Pacha time. So if you have an event or celebration and want to treat your guests to a truly authentic Greek lunch, speak to Lazaros who is happy to organise it for you.
It must also be said that the prices at the Mandraki 1800 Taverna are much more friendly than you will find in Hydra Town. It's a great place to bring a family for the day as it's attractively affordable.
In addition to serving meals in the Taverna, walkers can also buy refreshing drinks and ice-creams from the 'house' which they can either takeaway with them or enjoy on the beach.
The beach is a small pebble variety. There are a number of sunbeds and umbrellas which are free for Mandraki 1800 customers.
