The Georgia Supply boat is the main method used to transport ALL goods, furniture, food, provisions/stock for the island's supermarkets and shops, electrical supplies and even horses to the island. If you own a house on Hydra or you want something delivered to the island you will need the Georgia Supply Boat at some point. Many couples getting married on the island also use the Georgia service to pre-deliver bulky gifts, decoration items and even crates of champagne!
Delivery days are pure street theatre!
The Georgia generally unloads deliveries on a Saturday and Wednesday. During the high season there is often an extra day to cope with increased loads.
Sometimes, if the weather is not good, the days may change.
The Georgia Supply Boat is operated by Nikos Maragos (of the Maragos Supermarket and Bandera Cafe).
Sitting on the harbour at the Bandera Cafe presents a perfect view of everything being unloaded from the Georgia. The boat is unloaded by 7am with everything placed on the harbour side for people to find their purchases. Once found, items are loaded into handcarts, taken away on pallet rollers or loaded onto mules for onward delivery. Generally everything is cleared by 12 noon and anything not collected by then, is moved back onto the Georgia for safe keeping until the next morning.
Shipping TO Hydra
There is the mainland depot where supplies are delivered to in Piraeus (see the address below). From the Piraeus depot, a lorry is used to forward items to the harbour at Ermioni for collection. If you are sending bulky items such as household goods, furniture, bulk provisions or even garden plants/trees or shrubs, speak to Nikos in the supermarket for estimates of delivery costs.
Shipping OFF Hydra
Similarly, if you are sending items off island, the process is simply reversed. Nikos will tell you what day/time to deliver your things by mule to the Georgia so it can make its onward journey to Ermioni and then on to Pireaus where your final destination shipper can pick up from.
IKEA Inclusive delivery price online
Many purchases that can be made online in Greece can now include delivery. For those who like to buy online from IKEA, when you complete your online purchase, simply put the island's post code of 18040 in the shipping delivery option and the price will be automatically computed for you. This is then included in the price you pay and there is no need to visit Maragos Supermarket to pay again. Nikos is automatically paid by IKEA. But if the shipping agent or shop you are buying from does not have a 'deal' with Nikos' company, then you will have to give them the main Maragos depot address. Your supplier/shipper will probably charge you delivery just to the Maragos depot, then you will additionally pay Maragos for the onward ship journey with the Georgia. Again speak to Nikos before you make your purchases so you can anticipate the cost.
Homes PLUS Kranidi
For purchases either in person, by phone or online with Homes Plus, again give the details of Maragos, Georgia and the post code so that they can deliver at the right time to Ermioni to catch the Georgia delivery to Hydra. Generally the cost of delivery from Homes Plus in Kranidi to Ermioni is included, you just have to pay for the onward delivery using the Georgia.
Whomever you make your purchases with on the Greek mainland, check with Nikos first to find out whether the cost of the Georgia can be included or will be extra. And of course he can tell you which day to expect delivery and which depot to deliver tol.
