Captain's House provides accommodation in Hydra Town on Hydra Island Greece. It comprises 2 neighbouring apartments for holiday lets, weekend breaks or monthly winter rentals. Overlooking Hydra Port, with magnificent views of Hydra, Apartment 1 has 2 bedrooms. The neighbouring Apartment 2 has 1 bedroom and is behind Apartment 1. The apartments can be rented separately or together. Both are independent and have their own terraces.
Captain's House is one of Hydra's historical houses that is still privately owned by descendants of one of the Hydriot families who were actively involved in the 1800's War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire. The house is decorated with many portraits and nautical items from this period. The terrace overlooks Hydra Harbour and, in June during the Miaoulia Festival when the great battle against the Ottoman flagship is re-enacted, it is easy to imagine what it must have been like for the family watching anxiously from the terrace as the Hydriot fleet left the harbour to join the battles in 1821.
Location: Captain's House is only a 5 minute walk from the west corner of Hydra Port. The house is above the Veranda Restaurant and below the Hotel Hydra. Please see the map and detailed directions at the end of this page.
Apartment 1 is the larger of the two and offers accommodation for up to 4 people. The apartment is 70 m2 comprising:
Living Room: You step into the living room directly from the terrace. This large room has plenty of seating, a dining table for 4 and lots of interesting family heirlooms on the walls. There is also a small desk where you will find a telephone for local calls and to receive incoming calls, as well as the WiFi internet hub.
Master Bedroom & En-suite Shower: The large master bedroom is at the end of the corridor from the living room. It has a king-size double bed and a large wardrobe with drawers. You'll find plenty of hangers provided so you can unpack comfortably. There is a wall mounted Plasma TV in the master bedroom.
The twin bedroom: (sleeps 2 on single beds) is off the corridor between the living room and master bedroom. This room has a small wardrobe with a shelf for storage.
Kitchenette: In the corridor, opposite the twin bedroom, there is a kitchenette unit comprising: fridge, sink, 2 ring hob and above and below cupboards with crockery, cutlery a toaster and cooking utensils and cookware. You will also find a coffee making machine.
The terrace: is 100m2 and the furthest end of the terrace is for the exclusive use of Apartment 1. This part of the terrace is overlooked by the master bedroom, twin bedroom and living room of Apartment 1 and so is very private if you are renting just this apartment. Guests staying in Apartment 2 have their own side terrace from which to enjoy the marvellous view.
Apartment 2 is completely independent and is located behind Apartment 1. At the top of the entrance steps there is a private, 10m2 side terrace with table and chairs overlooking the harbour.
From the side terrace you walk though to a small courtyard at the back of the property which again is for the exclusive use of Apartment 2. From the courtyard you enter the kitchen (fully equipped), through to the large double bedroom. The shower room is between the kitchen and the bedroom. The courtyard also has a table and chairs so you can enjoy a private dinner under the stars.
Apartment 2 is suitable for 1 or 2 people and can be rented separately from apartment 1.You will find a toaster, kettle, fridge/freezer and mini-oven with two rings in the kitchen so you can make simple meals.
This apartment is also supplied with an iron & board, towels, linen and a hair-dryer. There is a plasma smart tv in the bedroom.
Even though the apartments can be rented separately, booking both apartments is ideal for two couples who wish to holiday together in the same house but want to have a greater degree of independence and space.
This totally depends on you. I'd be happy to help with anything you need, through What'sApp, Viber, email, FaceTime. When you arrive, you can either make your way to Captain's House where you will find the key in a digital key safe next to the door, or we can meet you off the flying cat and escort you to the property.
Our cleaning lady, is a trusted neighbour who you might meet during your stay when she comes to change over the bed linen. She is happy to do extra cleaning or laundry for you (at an extra cost).
Please note that in common with most houses on Hydra, Captain's House is not suitable for people with disabilities as there are stone street stairs to climb.
Please also note that due to the number of antiques and the height of the drop from the terrace, Captain's House is not suitable for children under the age of 12.

Directions to Captain's House: From the disembarkation area of the port, walk along the harbour (from the east side toward the west) passing the Alpha Bank, Piraeus bank and National Bank as well as the numerous shops and cafes on Hydra's water front. Turn left off the harbour front onto Votsi Street (between the Tassos and Roloi cafes). Walk by the shops (about 20 meters) and turn sharp right to the start of the steps of Lignou Street. Walk up the steps which turn left BEHIND the Ostria Restaurant and continue up the steps of Lignou street. Take the first right turning onto the steps of SAHINIS Street. Walk up these stone steps passing the side door of the Veranda Restaurant (on your left) and the street entrance for Captain's House is the next door after the Veranda on your left. Please note that the steps of Sahinis Street are quite steep and if you have more than hand-luggage you may need to pay for a mule to deliver your bags. We are happy to help arrange this for you.
