Tom Powell (b. 1987), already a powerful artist, is a young man whose work is developing and to my mind is an up-and-coming artist to watch. My opinion is shared by Didier Guillon, President, Owner and Artistic Director of the Valmont Foundation who has already added a number of Tom's works to his collection.
Mr Guillon is featuring a piece by Tom in the El Cuor No Se Vende exhibition being hosted by the Historical Archives & Museum of Hydra between the 1st July until the 31st August 2016. See more at: http://elcuornosevende.org/portfolio-item/tom-powell/#sthash.LgY3RCzX.dpuf
Tom was born in France in 1987 but wasn't always destined to be a painter. He first worked as a carpenter before becoming a sailor. In 2008, and after 5 years of sailing, Tom moored up permanently in Hydra port and took up his paint brushes: this will prove to be a genuine journey back to his roots for Tom as his grandparents Tony and Simonetta Powell, who were both painters, had resided in Hydra throughout the 70’s and 80’s.
Tom is a great admirer of fellow artists Dimitrios Gassoumis and Panagiotis Tetsis (sadly both are now dead) - had they given him any tips I'd wondered. Tom grinned and replied that he had gleaned a few tips from Gassoumis especially about mixing colours and of course like many people in Hydra he had shared an afternoon chatting with both these great artists but no, he hadn't studied with them as such even though some of Tom's earlier experimental work can be said to be in the style of. In fact, one of the paintings in his gallery is a tribute to Dimitrios Gassoumis: capturing one of Dimitris' favourite walks complete with sea glimpses, pine tree and his trademark colours and style. (See left-hand painting in the photo above.)
"Tom mainly paints landscapes, as well as still-life paintings and characters. He draws inspiration and energy from light. In his paintings, we find a subtly smooth balance between abstract and figurative, an authentic style that also unveils his commitment to free speech. Beyond the colours, lights and contrasts, Tom is especially interested in the overall harmony of a piece." (Valmont Foundation)
More recently Tom has challenged himself with pure abstract work producing a number of oils on paper which are very appealing in their depth and colour. For all the fact that he admits he found these pieces demanding, the results are very good and to my mind show a new level of sophistication in his work.
His work is displayed in the gallery of the Hydra Trading Company (which was originally the converted police station) in the west corner, just back from the harbour on the right before you reach the hospital. The Hydra Trading Company is open every day so visitors can call in to enjoy seeing his work which is also available to buy.
