Bisti Beach, Hydra Island Greece

Bisti Beach is set at the back of a sheltered bay and offers a gently sloping pebble beach into shallow water that you have to walk out some way before it reaches waist depth for most adults. Therefore I personally think of this as a family friendly beach.

I also recommend this beach for those who want a less commercial feel but still to have the convenience of being able to get refreshments, a sunbed and umbrella but only if you want to.

The back of the beach as you will see from the photos is lined with shady pine trees and you are welcome to drag your sunbed further back if you find the heat of the sun and the glare off the water a bit too much.

The beach boats pull in to one side and you can walk along the beach passing the sunbeds and umbrellas to the other end (about 200m) if you prefer to be more alone.

The far end of the beach has lots of pools and the shallow water making it a favourite place for people to look for interesting sea-urchins, starfish and tiny crabs.

Even when you go quite a way out into the bay, it isn't that deep and so it's a fantastic place to go snorkelling.

Cost of sunbed: €3 each for as long as you need it.

Please note that being under an umbrella is free of charge but on a first come, first served basis.

You can reserve sunbeds and umbrellas if you talk to Christos or his wife Billiou on the first day of your holiday. You can have the beds and position you want for the rest of your stay. You can't easily book the first day in advance, it one of those 'you have to be there to do it' things!

The Bisti Beach Boat

The Bisti beach boat makes regular runs throughout the day with more sailings during the summer as the days are longer.

You will find the beach boat moored off the Hydra Harbour wall opposite the Cathedral Clock Tower. The times for the sailings to and from Bisti Beach, along with the ticket prices are shown on boards at the back of the boat.

You simply need to arrive at the time you want to leave, get on board and pay the crew member. Don't forget to keep your receipt safe so you have it on the return journey. On the return trip, the boat leaves from the same place as it drops you off, to the side of the beach as you can see in the photo above.

(2017) Cost: Return ticket from Hydra Harbour to Bisti, €6 per person.

The trip takes about 20 minutes from Hydra harbour to Bisti and is a great way to get a view of Hydra's northern coastline and the tiny islets that you pass along the way to the western end of Hydra.

You can hike to Bisti, but I mean it is a strenuous hike of about 4 hours, and then pay €3 to get back to Hydra harbour on the beach boat. PLEASE make sure you let someone know that you will be hiking and take WATER with you. I also recommend that you program the emergency number into your mobile so that the emergency services can locate you by satellite if you get lost along the way.

The Bisti Periptero

The beach operator (Christos and his wife Billiou) have a small Periptero (snack bar) selling sandwiches, soft drinks, beers, and the like. But you are of course allowed to bring your own picnic.

Treat Your Guests To A Beach Party

As a destination for an authentic, relaxed Hydra event such as a beach birthday or wedding party, Bisti has all the right ingredients.

The little chapel of St George in the neighbouring bay provides a perfect backdrop for a civil wedding ceremony or, if you are Greek Orthodox, you can request a church wedding here.

Similarly, Bisti Beach is a great place to bring your guests to for an informal welcome or thank you party when you want to show your appreciation for everyone coming to your event. It will really give your friends and family lots of good memories of their time with you.

Christos and Billiou are best placed as the owners of the largest fleet of different types of boats on Hydra, to get your guests to and from the beach. They are also happy to reserve sunbeds/umbrellas for you or even to reserve part of the beach for your party.

Having a picnic lunch on the beach is great fun and easy to organise. Either you get your guests to bring their own picnics, or you can do it yourself. Christos is happy to transport 'provisions, drink and your preferred packed lunches for you. Or you can speak to him beforehand and he will arrange for whatever you want for lunch to be at the Periptero to be served to your guests.

Christos can bring your guests by boat to the next bay along, so you can have your wedding ceremony near the little St George's chapel and then your guests can walk with you through the pine trees to reach Bisti Beach for an informal style reception party. And of course, if you don't want the chapel as a backdrop, he can bring your guests straight to the beach.
