The present owners bought the house from Audrey and Robert Browning, former Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Greece, in 2003. The Brownings bought the house from Charles G.Hulse and Gordon Merrick in 1974. Hulse, a dancer turned actor turned novelist (In Tall Cotton 1987) and Merrick were partners for 32 years until Merrick’s death in 1988. In 1954 Hydra became home to Charles and Gordon for more than 20 years. Merrick published more than a dozen novels which were known for their gay themes. His most successful “The Lord of Mind” was written in Hydra. While in Hydra they were host to socialities, intellectuals and artists from all over the world. Charles Laughton, Jules Dassin, Melina Mercouri, Jaqueline Onassis, Leonard Cohen and others visited their house in Hydra which was admired by and photographed extensively for various international magazines.
Located in the aristocratic area known as 'Kourmada', this property for sale was originally built in 1620 by Venetian craftsmen as part of a large estate comprising a number of grand buildings with arched walkways connecting them. Today many of the arches are still evident and give area a very distinctive identity. In the mid 1800's the estate was broken up and sold to different families and the first floor of this particular piece of real estate was completely remodelled in 1842. By the mid 1950's Hydra had been 'discovered' by the 'intelligencia' as well as the artistic and creative icons, such as Ghikas, the Johnstons & Cohen who launched the cultural scene on Hydra in the 1960's all of whom were guests at this house. The property was completely renovated and modernised in the last decade with impeccable adherence to maintaining the integral character and traditional style of this delightful house.
Two homes in one - or to be combined
This two floor house for sale on Hydra is currently configured as two independent homes each with its own front door and separate outside space. It could be purchased as a combination of holiday home as well as an investment property if left in its current layout. Or, it could very easily have a staircase installed in the storage room at the back of the ground floor bathroom suite. The top of the stairs would come up in the landing between the bathroom and bedroom on the first floor.
The ground floor living space is larger than the first floor and features a split room off the entrance lobby. Entering the lobby from the street there is a small shower room and toilet to the right and a much larger suite of shower & utility rooms to the left. A lot of thought has been given to the 'useability' of the bathrooms of this property. The main ground floor bathroom is divided into a number of sections with a large shower area, hand basin with mirror and cupboards in the largest part of the room but with a closed off separate toilet, separate utility space and a large storage room each with a door. For families this is a big advantage.
The kitchen is an Italian design and is fully equipped with Smeg appliances.
Bedroom 1 Ground Floor
This is the larger of the two ground floor bedrooms. It is comfortably furnished with a large double bed and floor to ceiling fitted wardrobes. Even though there are four steps up to the room from the sitting area, the height of the ceiling is still high as the building follows the rise of the land. There is a window opening to the side terrace and across through a stone are to overlook the garden.
Main Sitting Room - Ground Floor
This is a very large double space divided by a long, elegantly curved arch. There is a traditional open fire to one corner, the original traditional bread oven in the back wall and there is a freshwater cisterna under the room with the well head built into the traditional day beds along the front wall. There are doors to both the front dining terrace as well as to the side courtyard. The second ground floor bedroom opens of this sitting room.
Second Bedroom - Ground Floor
The second bedroom is the smaller of the two ground floor bedrooms but still sufficient for a double bed and wardrobe. The window over looks the street to the side of the property that approaches the front door.
Ground Floor Outside Space
The outside space is arranged as four distinct areas with two pergola covered dining areas, an open courtyard and a well stocked garden featuring some of the original 1620's arches. The view is breath-taking and you can see across to the Peloponnese mainland. And of course it faces west so you are assured of spectacular sunset to enjoy.
The first floor of the house is accessed from the street door from the lane that runs behind the property. Wide stone stairs arrive at a large 80 m2 sea facing entrance terrace.
The first floor is almost open plan although the structural walls and steps create a logical layout for different uses.
The Kitchen is to one corner, with an area for the dining room next to the kitchen through an arch. The sitting room is to the front corner so that it takes advantage of the views over the terrace to the sea as well as the fireplace creating a focal point. The bedroom is raised with steps up through another arch and again the window provides a spectacular view even if you are laying on the bed. And the bathroom suite is logically in the final back corner.
Kitchen & Bathroom Suite
As with the ground floor, the kitchen on the first floor is Italian, fully equipped with Smeg appliances.
The bathroom suite off a small hallway, comprises a toilet cubicle with door, laundry cubical with door and a large shower opposite the hand basin and mirror. There are plenty of fitted cupboards for storage.
First Floor Outside Space
As you will see from the photos, even in the depths of winter, the view from the first floor entrance terrace is magnificent. The terrace is furnished with dining table and chairs, sun loungers and seating pads for the platforms either side of the front door. There is an extendable awning which covers most of this terrace for shade during the heat of summer.
First Floor Roof Terrace
In addition to the main entrance terrace, wooden stairs to the side of the building provide access to the 105 m2 roof terrace. The views from here are spectacular and from every angle you have almost a birds-eye view of Hydra's town, villages, coastline, sea and mountains. It is quite a breath-taking place to sit and it is easy to appreciate why this house has been so loved by artists over the centuries.
As you will have seen from the photographs this historical house has been lovingly maintained on a daily basis to a very high standard. The architectural integrity of the building is completely sound and in keeping with the original 1620 plans hence the flat roof (the pitched and tiled style of roof didn't come into practice until the mid 1700's). The interior walls are as wide as the external walls and provide excellent insulation keeping the building cool in the summer and retaining heat during the winder. Similarly the floor and cieling of the first floor is traditionally constructed so that they are almost a meter deep. Again, this helps with insulation for sound as well as temperature. Throughout you will see examples of beam and reed ceilings and cool flagstone flooring.
The house is being sold fully furnished with many antique pieces from Italy as well as Hydra. This Hydra house for sale is beautifully appointed and as such it is truly possible to move in tomorrow with just a suitcase of clothing so that you can start to appreciate your new Hydra home immediately.
