Contemporary Art Exhibition - IAMY

September 12, 2018 until 21 July 2019

Visual Presentation " CONTEMPORARY ART MEETS Naive Art in Hydra " from the  Collection of the Family Dr. Panos KORONAKI - Rohlf with  28 Works  20 Artists from eight countries of the world will take place at the Historical Archives-Museum of Hydra.

Independence Day

Date: Mon, 25 March 2019 Time: From 10:30 - 12:00 Location: Hydra Harbour

Hydriots today, along with all of Greece celebrate Greek Independence Day on the 25th March as a public and national holiday. (Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire 1821 - 1832.) Perhaps though, it should be noted that Hydriots take a more personal pride than most Greeks because it was from this tiny island that so much of the war was planned and fought. Many of today's Hydriots are fifth generation descendants of the families who played such an important role in Greece's bid for freedom and later in the development of modern Greek Government.

Hydra's Trail Event

Date: Sat & Sun, 6 - 7 April 2019

The sport of endurance and trail running in Greece has developed over the years. In 2012, Hydra was added to the sporting calendar hosting athletes from around the world for the Hydra's Trail Event annually at the beginning of April. There are 5 races during the course of the weekend with participants from all over the world. Visitors and supporters tend to gather at the start/finish line as well as along the courses.

Greek Easter

Date: Fri - Mon, 26 - 29 April 2019

Although the most serious and important time of year for the Greek Orthodox Christians, the last night of Πάσχα Holy Week is undeniably one of the most exciting times of the year for Greeks and of course, for visitors to the island at this time. After the solemnity and austerity of Lent with the mournful observance of the Crucifixion of Christ on Good Friday, Hydra erupts with happiness and exuberance after the Saturday Midnight Mass for the celebration of the resurrection at Páscha.

May Day

Date: Wed, 1 May 2019

Even though it is now associated with a bank holiday for workers hence it also being known as Labour Day, on Hydra the ancient pagan "festival of the flowers" once associated with Demeter and Persephone, is celebrated with enthusiasm. On Hydra you will find May wreaths, made with flowers gathered from the hills of Hydra, decorating shops, homes, doorways, balconies, in chapels, and many other places. The banks, post office and municipal offices are closed on the 1st of May.

Miaoulia Fireworks

Date: Sat, 22 June 2019 Time: From 19:00 till late Location: Hydra Harbour

The Miaoulia Festival is a Hydra specific event and one of the most important dates on the island's calendar. Preceding the final weekend the municipality organises approximately 10 days of events involving the communities schools & clubs. The culmination of the festival is a huge battle re-enactment & firework display on Saturday 22nd June 2018.

Hydrama Theatre

Date: July - August 2019 Time: 21:15 Location: Hydrama Theatre Vlychos Ticket Price: Free

The Hydrama Theatre presents 5-6 productions for 1 night per week (on a Thursday) showcasing performances by international & Greek dancers and actors. These popular performances are held at the open-air Hydrama Theatre in Vlychos.

Hydra World Music Festival

Date: August 2019

This event is held every two years and introduces international singers and musicians hosted at many locations around Hydra.

Assumption Day

Date: Thursday, 15 August 2019

Assumption Day (Dormition of the Virgin Mary) is a Greek Orthodox Religious observation, which because it is of such significant importance to the Greeks, is also a National Bank Holiday allowing them to travel to be with family at this important occasion. This is a joyful celebration because it commemorates Mary's reunion with Jesus in heaven. On Hydra, the congregation of the island's main churches fast and celebrate mass for the week leading up to the 15th as well as observing mass after. The main focus of the week centres on the Monastery Church in the centre of Hydra Harbour which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Charity Concert

Date: Saturday, 17 August 2019 Time: 21:00 Location: Courtyard of the Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Ticket Price: €50

10th charity classical concert in memory of Kostis Sofianos. All proceeds to the Kouloura Hospital of Hydra.

Rebetiko Festival

Date: Saturday, 5 October 2019 Time: From 20:30 till late Location: Xeri Elia (Douskos) Taverna Ticket Price: Free Admission (Pay for your dinner & donations on the night appreciated.)

The Rebetiko Conference of Hydra as well as the regular rebetiko music evening organized by Ed Emery, SOAS Rebetiko BAND and the Institute of Rebetology will come to Hydra and present the Rebetiko music evening, which is the main event of the conference,  that is open to everyone. Admission is free but you will need to book a table for dinner at the Xeri Elia Taverna. Please contact Stavros Douskos asap to reserve a table early as this is a very popular event of music, singing and dancing!

Yacht Race

Date: Fri - Sun 25 - 27 October 2019

Organised by the Greek Yachting Association, the October 2018 regatta closes the summer season. Participating yachts race from Piraeus and depending upon the weather, start coming into Hydra Harbour on the Friday night. There's a hospitality event for the yachtsmen followed by an award ceremony, before the yachts leave on the Sunday morning for the next leg of the race.

Ochi Day

Date: Monday, 28 October 2019 Time: From 10:00 till 12:00 Location: Hydra Harbour

Ochi Day is a Greek National Holiday celebrating the Anniversary of the 'NO'. It is celebrated throughout Greece, Cyprus and the Greek communities around the world to commemorate the rejection by Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas (in power from August 4, 1936, until January 29, 1941) of the ultimatum made by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on October 28, 1940, during World War II. On Hydra, there are church services and a parade along Hydra Harbour with all the children and students of Hydra taking part.

Hydra's Patron Saint's Day

Date: Thursday, 14 November 2019 Time: Procession from 10:30 till 12:00 Location: Ag. Konstandinos Church to Hydra Harbour

The celebration of Hydra's Patron Saint, Aghios Konstandinos, starts on the 13th. On the 14th the Doxology is sung in the subsequently formed 'Litaneftiki' procession which leaves the Church of Aghios Konstandinos at 10:30 and makes its way down the winding road from Kiaffa through the pine trees to Kala Pigadi and then down to the harbour following Andreas Miaoulia Street. Eventually the procession finishes with a blessing outside the port entrance to the Cathedral.

SwimRun Hydra

Date: TBC November 2019


Team Swimming & Running sports event hosted on Hydra for the first time in 2018 with great success. A maximum of 50 pairs taking part in various locations around the island.
A SwimRun is a multiple-stage competition which involves a pair of athletes running and swimming tied together with a rope, over a cross-country race course or loop-course that involves at least 2 transitions (3 transitions in the case of Hydra and a total of 14,7km) between the swim (3,7k) and run (11k) stages of the race. Athletes may use special swimming equipment like wetsuits, paddles or pull buoys, except for floating aids (not provided by the organiser). They can also wear shoes during the running legs. However, each piece of equipment has to be carried throughout the race. The team of 2 must complete the race tied together with the rope which the organiser will provide.
